How the world clock works

The world clock shows the current local time in more than 5,000 cities. Pick a city to see its exact time, its time zone, and how far ahead or behind it is from other places. It is the quick way to answer “what time is it there right now?” before you call, message or travel.

Find a city three ways

  • Search for a city by name in the box at the top.
  • Tap a popular city like New York, London or Tokyo.
  • Browse by continent and country to drill down to a smaller town.

Time zones and UTC in plain words

The world is split into time zones, and each one is a set number of hours ahead of or behind UTC (the global reference time). London sits near UTC, New York is about five hours behind it, and Tokyo is nine hours ahead. That gap is why a 9:00 AM call in one city can be the middle of the night in another.

CityRoughlyWhen it is noon in London
Los AngelesUTC−84:00 AM
New YorkUTC−57:00 AM
LondonUTC±012:00 noon
DubaiUTC+44:00 PM
TokyoUTC+99:00 PM

Daylight saving time

Many countries move their clocks forward an hour in spring and back an hour in autumn. This is daylight saving time. It means the gap between two cities can change twice a year, and for a week or two the usual difference may be off by an hour. Each city page lists its next clock change so you are never caught out.

Tip: Scheduling a call across zones? Open both city pages and use the overlap table on each to find working hours that suit everyone.

World clock questions

What is UTC?

UTC is Coordinated Universal Time, the world's reference clock. Every time zone is described as a number of hours ahead of or behind UTC, which makes it easy to compare any two places.

Why does the time difference between two cities change?

Because of daylight saving time. When one country moves its clocks and the other does not, the gap between them shifts by an hour until they line up again.

How many cities can I check?

More than 5,000, from big capitals to small towns. Start from a country hub such as the United States or United Kingdom and pick any city.
